A Sense of Time and Place

Creating a story with a sense of validity, a sense of the possible and the plausible, is about using knowledge of history, using detail and color and appropriate rhythm and light, sound and sensibility to reveal a time and place.  This comes from experience and connection.

The same is true for creating a work of visual art.  Even if it’s not a narrative, the artist tells a story and tells it with validity when she utilitizes art history, when he uses detail, color, rhythm, light and sound to create a setting (the space within the picture plane).  These stories, these pictures, these sculptural expressions document what it is to be human in your own time and place.  It’s tied to individual experience in a landscape, in a society with all of its cultural tradition.  There is simply no escaping that.  But within that framework, there is a lot of space and breath to be designed.
